Ensuring Representation in the Voluntary and Community Sector (VCS)
Every organisation deserves a seat at the table. At Dorset VCSA (voluntary and community sector assembly), we work to make sure charities, community groups, and voluntary organisations have a strong voice in key decisions that shape Dorset’s future.
The establishment of the Integrated Care System (ICS) has created new opportunities for the voluntary sector to be heard at the highest levels. However, representation needs to be meaningful—not just a token presence. That’s where we come in, by amplifying voluntary sector voices, we can influence service design, resource allocation, and policy decisions. We will do this by supporting representatives from the VCS to take part in strategic discussions.
How We Make Representation Happen
- Opening Doors – We secure opportunities for VCS organisations to participate in ICS Boards, decision-making forums, and strategic meetings, ensuring they have real influence where it matters.
- Supporting Participation – We help organisations of all sizes engage, offering training, mentoring, and covering expenses so smaller groups can have their say and be heard.
- Championing Inclusivity – We advocate for accessible meeting times, fair processes, and diverse representation, ensuring voices from all parts of the sector are heard.
A Representation System That Works for Everyone
Not every role requires the same experience or knowledge of the VCS. That’s why we support a range of representation opportunities:
- Strategic Representation – High-level decision-making roles that shape policies and long-term strategies.
- Theme-Specific Representation – Knowledge-based experts and experts by experience (e.g., health inequality, mental health, food poverty) who can guide sector priorities.
- Operational & Delivery Representation – Those working on the ground to ensure services meet real community needs.
- Geographical Representation – Advocates with deep knowledge of local areas and community challenges.
Creating Lasting Impact
By ensuring fair, transparent, and well-supported representation, we make sure decisions reflect the real needs of Dorset’s communities.
Together, we can make sure every voice is heard. Join us in driving change and securing a stronger future for the voluntary sector in Dorset.
